Shivaraj Kumar is currently at the peak of his popularity, with two of his recent films -- Jogi and Anna Thangi -- proving to be blockbusters. Ashoka, which was started before the release of these two, is an action and issue-based film.

Kumar plays the role of a don determined to correct the ills of society. Director Shivamani has created a larger than life character here, whose mission it is to cleanse society by going against white collar criminals and the politician-cop nexus. Shivamani's strength has always been the technical inputs he puts into the making of a film, and Ashoka really does look different. Although the story has nothing new to offer, the film's technical superiority and pace holds the interest of viewers.

The plot revolves around the conflict between an honest father and his educated, talented son. Ashoka is the son of a police constable who wants his son to become a IPS officer. He gets selected to the IPS but, unfortunately, finds himself framed in an assault case. His selection is withdrawn, much to his father's anguish. From then on, Ashoka and his friends indulge in looting the rich to pay the poor.

Kumar has the perfect physique and body language to play the role of Ashoka. He is very good in the action sequences too. The film's major negative point is in the selection of its heroine. Srinivasa Murthy is perfect for the father's role, while Vinaya Prasad plays the role of honest cop quite well. Sathya Prakash and Sathyajit are passable in the villains' roles.

Overall, Ashoka is good if you want to see another side of Shivaraj Kumar. Perfect for fans who have just seen him in sentimental sagas like Anna Thangi and Jogi.
