Bipasha Basu
rules. Trade pundits, producers, costars -- everyone sings the Bengali beauty's praises these days.
Magazine covers, top billing, limousine rides, big banners, bigger shows, she is being offered the best. The actress is very amused at all this attention.
At the moment, Bipasha is shooting a commercial with Akshay Kumar. Much before Akshay turns up on the sets, she is ready and waiting with makeup on. She has been shooting since 6 am, she tells Rohini Iyer.
She is tucking into a sandwich when she is called for the next shot. She leaves it midway. "Finish the sandwich, it is okay," an assistant assures her. Bipasha shoots back, "And keep the entire unit waiting? No way. Work comes first."
What is your take on Jism?
The name Jism is so strong it hits the audience. But it is not a pornographic film. It is not an erotic film. It is a love story which believes that attraction draws people together. Falling in love too has a lot to do with attraction. That is something that is neglected and overlooked in Hindi films. They only show girls and boys singing, dancing and fighting with their families.
Jism
is not like that. Jism is a mature love story.
But the promos are shocking.I did feel the promos were steamy, but there are so many Hindi music videos that are 2,000 times more shocking. So I don't think there is any need for alarm bells to ring. I think they [Jism promos] have been shot beautifully. It is about two people in love. And when you see the film, you will understand.
You play Gulshan Grover's wife in the film. What prompted you to play a role which other heroines wouldn't touch with a barge pole?
Let's get this very clear. I am not playing Bipasha Basu in the film. I leave that so-called 'star' baggage behind when I am acting. That is why it is called acting.
It is a story and I'm simply sticking to the character. I think it is a challenging role. I'm not here to stick to the safe and tried and tested. That is not what acting is all about.
If you are an actress, you have to be ready to play all kinds of characters.
Your character in Jism has an extramarital affair. Do you think that could be misunderstood in any way?
If I play a character who has an extramarital affair, that does not mean I am propagating extramarital affairs. I'm the kind of person who would stand very strongly against extramarital affairs.
Jism
is a story with a compelling screenplay. I simply had to do this role because it has so many shades. I'm looking forward to the film's release.
You are the only actress who has the guts to do all kinds of roles.*smiles* There are many projects coming up. People approach Bipasha Basu because she is the only one who will take risks. She will listen to all kinds of roles, positive, negative, you name it. So I get all kinds of offers and I am happy that is happening. Because out of the 10 odd offers that I get every day, two seem worthwhile. That's all that matters.
