Bank unions divided over strike
September 30, 2004 19:47 IST
Bank unions appear to be divided on whether or not to go on a two-day nationwide strike on October 5 and 6.
The United Forum of Bank Unions, represented by over 170,000 bank employees, has decided to go on a strike but All India Bank Staff Association has decided not to do so.
In a statement, UFBU said it has given a call for the strike in protest against the government and Indian Bank Association's delay in revising their salaries.
State Bank of India Staff Federation, an affiliate of UFBU said its members have strongly criticised and condemned the efforts of IBA and government to thwart the initiatives by bank unions in revising wages.
However, All India PNB Workers Federation, affiliated to AIBSA, said they are not inclined to participate in the strike.
All the bank unions had struck work on August 24 and demanded that wages be revised as early as possible.
The unions have pitched for about 16-20 per cent pay hike.
