Telecommunication services provider Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd and global microprocessor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices on Thursday launched personal Internet communicator, a consumer device that offers managed Internet access to end-users.
PIC, which has been developed based on AMD's technology, would be offered under Tata Indicom broadband services, VSNL head, (broadband business) Shashi Kalathil said.
Customers can access a variety of communication and productivity tools including Internet browser, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet applications and presentation viewer, among others, he said.
"PIC would help eliminating the financial barrier in accessing of Internet as it does not require a large capital investment," he said.
PIC would be offered to Tata Indicom broadband customers, along with all necessary hardware and software, as part of bundled Internet service, he said adding, a variety of financing options would also be made available for the product.
AMD chairman and chief executive officer Hector Ruiz said that PIC was developed as part of the company's global '50x15' initiative of providing affordable Internet and computing capabilities to 50 per cent of the world's population by the year 2015.
AMD has also created a global ecosystem of participating companies to develop usable, affordable technologies and make them available in high-growth markets, to accomplish this goal, he said.
