November 30, 2004 15:58 IST
Communication and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Tuesday showered words of praise on Pradip Baijal, chairman, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India saying he has done a great job, especially in reducing telecom tariffs. "Baijal is an authority in reducing tariffs and has done it in a very efficient manner. Today, tariffs in India are one of the lowest in the world," Maran said.
Asked if the department of telecommunication was averse to inclusion of Baijal in the experts' committee on rural telephony constituted by the planning commission, the minister said, "Baijal brings a lot of experience with him and his contribution to further the growth of communication services in rural areas will be of great help."
Even the two PSUs - BSNL and MTNL - have approached TRAI, seeking reduction in international bandwidth prices.
Presently, India has a lot of bandwidth available from various players like Tatas, Reliance and Bharti, which is yet "to be lit", he said, adding that there was a scope for further reduction in tariffs of bandwidth.
