Under pressure from Left parties, the government on Wednesday rolled back its decision to increase domestic cooking gas price by Rs 5 per cylinder every month.

The government had on November 4 decided to raise liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price by Rs 20 per cylinder and announced a Rs 5 per cylinder hike in price every month to cover for the steep hike in cost of raw material (crude oil).

"It has been decided by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs that the previous decision to raise LPG price by Rs 5 every month stands rescinded," Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar told reporters.

The decision follows UPA coordination committee meeting in the morning where Left parties demanded a roll back in the steep price rise.

Aiyar said price of no other petroleum product was being changed.

Besides hiking LPG prices, the government had also raised diesel price by Rs 2.12 a litre and petrol by Rs 2.20 per litre.

In the subsequent revision in prices on November 15, petrol prices were slashed by Rs 1.16 per litre, but diesel was not touched.

The petroleum minister, who refused to say why the decision to raise LPG price was being rolled back, said all other decisions of the CCEA, held on November 4, would stand.
