Siemens, the global leader in electrical and electronics engineering, inaugurated its new research centre, Siemens Corporate Technology India in Bangalore.

The centre is aimed at strengthening its international presence in research and development and expanding in leading markets.

The research centre will serve as a network hub for the Asian regions. Significantly, the new high-end research centre in India is the ninth state-of-the-art facility of CT worldwide centres.

Siemens will foster university collaborations as a key element in order to extend CT's international network and create a pipeline of potential, future employees of India's multi-disciplinary talent pool.

Dr Claus Weyrich, head of Siemens Corporate Technology, said, "Research needs to be carried out where science and technology are vibrant. This is why we are significantly expanding our research network across the globe, especially at locations that serve as network hubs. Initially, the Siemens CT India will focus on research areas related to medical, information technology and security automation.

The researchers will be working on programs centered on embedded systems for computer vision, smart visual and audio processing devices for security and automotive applications, client-server technologies for next generation of medical imaging solution, and software engineering technologies for multi-site global product line developments.

Today, Siemens is clearly a market leader in real-time video analysis - a growing security need. Real-time video analysis systems have been developed for highway and subway monitoring to detect abnormal crowd and/or traffic conditions.

Other security applications include people and face detection, plus tracking and zooming. These technologies will soon be embedded in intelligent cameras networked across local area or mobile phone networks.
