After yesterday's drubbing, the Sensex today opened 30 points lower at 5,296. Volatile movements was witnessed through the opening session, as the index, which bounced back into the green to touch an intra-day high of 5,388 on strong buying support in most of the sectors, soon drifted into the red to touch its opening figure.

Though the markets reverted back into the green, steady buying in old and new economy stocks kept the index in a range-bound mode through the trading session.

The Sensex, on selective buying in heavyweight, PSU, cement and auto stocks, added 32 points to close at 5,358. The Nifty ended 12 points higher at 1,711.

While 22 Sensex stocks advanced, eight declined today. Advancing shares accounted for a volume of 2.60 crore amounting to Rs 1,119.64 crore, and declining shares registered a volume of 28 lakh for Rs 133.64 crore.

Reliance added 1.40% (Rs 7) to Rs 497. HLL was up a per cent at Rs 142. ITC, however, ended subdued with a loss of Rs 6 at Rs 931.

Infosys was up a per cent (Rs 35) at Rs 5,090. While Wipro gained 1.34% (Rs 20) to Rs 1,528, Satyam closed up a tad at Rs 297.

MTNL moved up 2% (Rs 3) to Rs 145. SBI and BHEL were up a per cent each at Rs 621 and Rs 575, respectively. HPCL at Rs 409 (down Rs 10 or 2.29%) continued with its southward trend due to sharp selling pressure.

ACC rose 3.61% (Rs 10) to Rs 277. While L&T gained 2.64% (Rs 14) to Rs 542, Grasim and Gujarat Ambuja, however, lost a per cent each to close at Rs 1,112 (down Rs 12) and Rs 314 (down Rs 3), respectively.

Tata Motors jumped 2.74% (Rs 12) to Rs 441. While Bajaj advanced 2.49% (Rs 23) to Rs 936, Hero Honda ended with a per cent gain (Rs 3) at Rs 463.

ONGC logged 1.29% gains (Rs 11) to Rs 838. Tisco also ended higher with a gain of 2.73% (Rs 8) at Rs 316.

HDFC witnessed strong selling pressure in its counter, and shed 3.26% (Rs 20) to Rs 590. Hindalco (down Rs 26 or 2.58% to Rs 967) had a mixed outing, but slipped sharply towards the close to end at lower levels. HDFC Bank (down Rs 3 to Rs 368) also ended weak.
