Private players like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Citibank have outsmarted heavyweight State Bank of India by attracting more clients to buy railway tickets through their Internet banking facilities.
With online ticket booking gaining momentum during the sultry and torrid summer, HDFC Bank has collected Rs 5.15 crore (Rs 51.5 million) for the Railways ever since the facility was introduced in August 2003.
HDFC Bank clocked almost 7,000 transactions worth over Rs 1.0 crore (Rs 10 million) of online rail bookings during the first 20 days of March, HDFC Bank's head of retail banking, Neeraj Swaroop, said in a statement on Tuesday.
HDFC Bank was followed by ICICI Bank with Rs 3.62 crore (Rs 36.2 million) and Citibank with Rs 1.22 crore (Rs 12.2 million).
Surprisingly, the country's biggest bank SBI could garner only Rs 33.03 lakh (Rs 3.3 million) from online ticketing business.
Other banks like UTI Bank clocked a business of Rs 29.01 lakh (Rs 2.9 million) from online rail ticket booking while IDBI Bank garnered Rs 25.24 lakh (Rs 2.5 million), Global Trust Bank (Rs 893,000), Centurion Bank (Rs 732,000) and Bank of Panjab (Rs 407,000).
