Imagine not having to make a phone call to your driver waiting in the far-away parking lot, and yet reaching him on a mobile phone cum walkie-talkie.

Tata Teleservices is coming with a walkie-talkie like facility on its mobile phones for which it has tied up with the United States-based CDMA giant Qualcomm for acquiring technology.

"The service will work as push-to-talk between person-to-person or person-to-group communication," S Ramakrishnan, CMD of Tata Teleservices told reporters in New Delhi.

Tata Teleservices will be one of the first CDMA operators outside the US to launch push-to-talk and the first in the world to commercially launch BREWChat solution enabling communication between a group of subscribers at a push of a button.

The company is planning to launch the services in July, he said adding that currently it was studying the market and tariff strategy for the new service.

Qualcomm would also provide engineering support service to TTSL to help roll out the new service enabled by third generation network.

"There are exciting opportunities ahead. CDMA is making a large impact in India, Paul Jacobs, group president, Qualcomm, said after announcing the tie-up with TTSL.

He said that vendors like Nokia, Motorola, LG and Samsung were planning to offer push-to-talk enabled handsets.
