GM celebrates relaunch of Chevrolet brand

March 13, 2004 14:27 IST

General Motors on Saturday celebrated the relaunch of its Chevrolet brand with the United States Ambassador David Mulford assuring that the American market will be open to Indian goods.

"The US and India should work together for better inflow of goods and capital. The US market will remain open for Indian goods," he said flagging off a car rally -- organised on the occasion -- in New Delhi.

The Indian arm of the world's biggest carmaker, General Motors India, relaunched the Chevrolet, the popular brand of yore, in February last year with its sports utility vehicle Chevrolet Forester followed by Chevrolet Optra sedan in July.

"I am pleased to know GMI is hiking the production capacity in India which is one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the region," Mulford said.

The Indo-US trade stood at $24 billion in 2003, he added.

The company, which has recently announced plans to acquire the car assembly unit of Daewoo Motors India, is in the process of augmenting production capacity at its Halol (Gujarat) plant from 25,000 units annually to 50,000 units.

"GM knows we cannot be successful and remain the world's largest automaker without participating in, and without the participation of, India," GMI president and managing director Aditya Vij said.

India would play an increasingly important role within the GM family, Vij said.
