GAIL casts the net on mosquitoes

In a somewhat unrelated diversification, Gas Authority of India Ltd has decided to manufacture mosquito nets.

GAIL has had prolonged discussions with World Health Organisation for manufacturing long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets as per the organisation's specifications.

The World Health Organisation has already identified a polymer being manufactured by Exxon Mobil -- Grade HY800 -- for application in the manufacture of such mosquito nets for Africa.

GAIL is of the opinion that the high-density poly ethelyne being manufactured by it compares favourably with the Exxon Mobil product and therefore could be used to manufacture insecticidal mosquito nets.

It is planning trial production of this 11.5 micron filament at Bangalore and Pune. Sumitomo of Japan has agreed to supply insecticidal for the mosquito nets.

GAIL is also holding discussions with the municipal corporation of Delhi for promoting biodegradable bags.

The company is also holding talks with various biodegradable master batch manufacturers for supply of bags with its high-density poly ethelyne resin on job work basis.
