Market cap: Tatas set to beat Reliance

July 23, 2004 16:53 IST

Tatas on Friday said they would become the nation's top private sector wealth creator, surpassing rival Reliance within a fortnight on the strength of the ensuing initial public offer of TCS which could help the group's market capitalisation cross Rs 95,000 crore (Rs 950 billion).

"The scenario will change in the next 15 days," TCS executive vice-president Phiroz Vandrevala told PTI when asked about the group's position as wealth creator, overshadowed by Ambani-controlled Reliance Group, whose market capitalisation was over Rs 77,000 crore (Rs 770 billion) as on July 21.

Whether Tatas as a group would be able to overtake Oil and Natural Gas Corporation whose market cap stood close to Rs 100,000 crore (Rs 1,000 billion), would be decided on the day of listing of TCS shares after the IPO closes on August 5.

At the top of the price band at Rs 900, the TCS IPO for 5.54 crore (55.4 million) shares could help realise about Rs 5,000 crore (Rs 50 billion) . This could mean market capitalisation of Rs 43,000 crore (Rs 430 billion), he said, expressing confidence that listing of the shares could be at much higher prices after the public offer.

Minus TCS, Tatas' market capitalisation (through over two dozen listed companies) stands at about Rs 53,000 crore (Rs 530 billion). Among the private sector, the AV Birla Group stands at third position with a market cap of about Rs 22,000 crore (Rs 220 billion).

Bharat Vasani, general counsel of Tata Sons, the holding company of entire Tata businesses, told PTI: "We can become the top wealth creator of nation,"

The group would do everything possible to maintain its "numero uno" position, he said.

"We have maintained that the Tatas have been grossly undervalued. With the TCS IPO we are unlocking this value," he added.
