US demand fuels garment exports

Riding on an upswing in the US market, the country's garment exports to quota countries witnessed a growth of 19.35 per cent in value terms at $377.5 million in June, 2004.

In quantity terms, exports grew 13.9 per cent to 85.2 million pieces in June 2004 as against 74.8 million pieces in June 2003.

Exports to the US showed an increase of 29.81 per cent in terms of quantity and 26.62 per cent in terms of value at 270 million pieces and $154.6 million.

Garment exports to European Union during June 2004 increased by 7.17 per cent in terms of quantity and 14.94 per cent in terms of value at 538 million pieces at $207.7 million, according to figures compiled by the Apparel Export Promotion Council.

Garment exports during April-June, 2004 amounted to 325 million pieces valued at $1304 million, representing an increase of 4.4 per cent in terms of quantity and 9.22 per cent in terms of value as compared to the corresponding period the previous year.

In the first half of the calender year, garment exports stood at 726.1 million pieces valued at $2899.3 million, an increase of 1.94 per cent and 7.93 per cent respectively.
