"Yesterday, Infosys uploaded their TDS returns on the network," Central Board of Direct Taxes member B Swarup said in New Delhi on Thursday.

Usually, the return of Infosys used to weigh 180 kgs because of the massive paperwork for vast labour force, he quipped and admitted that (manual) filing of TDS returns had been a problem in the country.

Finance Minister Jaswant Singh had launched TIN, which would be managed by National Securities Depositories, enabling e-filing of TDS returns and payment of refunds (e-refunds) directly to the taxpayers bank account.

Recommended by Vijay Kelkar task force, TIN envisages e-filing of TDS, online tax accounting system and computerisation of annual information returns.

To make the system work smooth, about 11,000 bank branches would be connected to TIN.
