February 07, 2004 15:43 IST

India's foreign exchange reserves rose by a further $761 million to near the $105-billion mark for the week ended January 30.

The country's foreign exchange reserves went up by $761 million to $104.998 billion in the period under review, according to Reserve Bank of India's weekly statistical supplement released in Mumbai on Saturday.

The foreign currency assets also saw an increase of $761 million to touch $100.780 billion, it said.

Forex market sources said the reserves have gone up due to fresh inflows and revaluation of the US dollar vis-à-vis other currencies.

RBI said gold and special drawing rights remained static at $4.215 billion and $3 million, respectively.

India's Reserve Tranche Position with the International Monetary Fund declined by $16 million to $1.312 billion, the central bank said adding, the RTP may change from time-to-time due to India's transactions with the IMF as well as changes in SDR exchange rates vis-a-vis rupee and the dollar.

The loans and advances to central government continued with a nil balance while that state governments declined by Rs 78 crore (Rs 780 million) at Rs 4,122 crore (Rs 41.22 billion), RBI added.

Aggregate deposits of scheduled commercial banks for the fortnight ending January 23 grew by Rs 2,292 crore (Rs 22.92 billion) -- 0.2 per cent -- to Rs 14,39,685 crore (Rs 14,396.85 billion).

Bank credit increased by Rs 3,361 crore (Rs 33.61 billion) at Rs 7,95,350 crore (Rs 7,953.50 billion).

Food credit was up by Rs 150 crore (Rs 1.50 billion) at Rs 36,686 crore (Rs 366.86 billion), while non-food credit increased by Rs 3,211 crore (Rs 32.11 billion) to Rs 7,58,664 crore (Rs 7,586.64 billion).
