Sensex closes at 6,228, down 6 points

The Sensex, which displayed volatility during the trading session on Wednesday, touched a high of 6,273 and a low of 6,176 in the opening session. However, selling pressure in tech, auto and other select old economy stocks saw it close with a small loss of six points at 6,228. The Nifty, however, ended three points up at 1,962.
Infosys remained weak through the session, and lost nearly 2% (Rs 40) to Rs 2,108. While Satyam declined nearly 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 426, Wipro was down 1.44% (Rs 11) at Rs 755.
Hero Honda slumped 4.74% (Rs 23) to Rs 469. While Maruti dipped 2.92% (Rs 12) to Rs 408, Tata Motors was down a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 478.
HDFC Bank declined 2.46% (Rs 12) to Rs 483, and ICICI Bank closed down a tad at Rs 340. SBI, however, moved up 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 541.
Reliance, with a traded volume of over 32.61 lakh on BSE, remained firm on sustained buying support, and added 2.23% (Rs 11) to Rs 528. ITC ended with a small gain of Rs 2 at Rs 1,290. HLL was down 1.52% (Rs 2) at Rs 142.
Bharti attracted considerable buying support, and notched up 5.76% gains (Rs 10) to Rs 184. Over 47.82 lakh shares were traded on BSE.
HDFC dropped 3.90% (Rs 31) to Rs 769.
Pharma and cement counters ended on a mixed note, after a weak intra-day trading session.
