Sensex down 16 points at close

The markets opened with a positive gap of 50 points at 5,886 and soon touched an intra day high of 5,897 in the morning deals itself. However, selling pressure commenced thereafter due to which the Sensex started dipping.

The selling pressure intensified in the afternoon deals due to which the Sensex touched an intra-day low of 5,781. However, it pared some losses towards the end and so the Sensex finally ended the day with a loss of 16 points at 5822. The Nifty also ended 5 points lower at 1851.

Reliance which had a good opening and then slipped into the red finally ended the day with a marginal gain at Rs 578. HLL ended the day with a loss of 1.5% (Rs 2) at Rs 155 while ITC ended marginally lower at Rs 1083.

Infosys which started off with a bang due to news of a stock split and bonus share pared some of its losses to end the day with a gain of 3% (Rs 140) at Rs 5327. Satyam ended marginally lower (1% or Rs 4) at Rs 310 while Wipro added 1.2% (Rs 17) to end at 1409.

Among PSUs, ONGC was down marginally (half a percent) at Rs 848. SBI which had announced plans of an overseas acquisition gained 2% (Rs 13) to Rs 627. While BHEL ended 2.5% lower (Rs 16) at Rs 639, HPCL ended the day marginally lower at Rs 524.50.

Ranbaxy, after being in the red for most of the day ended 2% higher at Rs 1010. While Cipla ended marginally higher at Rs 1191, Dr. Reddy's lost nearly 1% to end at Rs 966.

Bajaj Auto and ACC were down lost 2% each at Rs 892 and Rs 258 respectively. Bharti Tele-Ventures ended the day with a marginal gain of 1% (Rs 2) at Rs 166 after it had seen huge gains throughout the day.

While Gujarat Ambuja gained marginally to Rs 307, Grasim lost nearly 1.5% (Rs 17) to Rs 1140. Hero Honda was down a percent at Rs 489.
