Govt employees give 3-month ultimatum to Centre

September 25, 2003 19:22 IST

Setting the tone for Friday's trade unions' convention, representatives of the state and central government employees on Thursday gave a three-month ultimatum to the Centre to meet their demands, including restoration of the right to strike, which was turned down by the Supreme Court recently.

"If the government does not frame a new set of rules and ratify various ILO conventions, including the one which gives the government employees right to strike, within next three months, we may be forced to go on strike," S K Vyas, president, Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers, told PTI in New Delhi.

Briefing on the outcome of the day-long meeting of All India State Government Employees Federation and the confederation, he said, a draft declaration was finalised as per which a mass petition will be submitted to Parliament by December demanding ratification of the relevant ILO conventions so that the government employees enjoy full trade union rights, including the right to strike.
