Gujarat: Project offers top Rs 50000 crore

The investment proposals received by the state government during the Vibrant Gujarat-Global Investors' Summit shot up to a whopping Rs 55,418 crore (Rs 554.18 billion) on Tuesday, with the third day witnessing offers worth Rs 10,000 crore (Rs 1,000 billion) flowing in from investors.

Since Monday evening, memorandums of understanding worth about Rs 10,000 crore have been signed.

The focus now shifts to Surat, where the gems and jewellery and garments and textiles industries are expected to attract investments.

Aashapura Minechem, a private company that has been into mining for over two decades, signed an MoU for setting up an alumina plant at Mandvi. The proposed project is worth Rs 2,500 crore (Rs 25 billion).

Paurcur Energy and Infrastructure Ltd proposes to set up a Rs 1,500-crore (Rs 15-billion) cow dung-based power project at Radhanpur in north Gujarat.

NEG Micron (India) Ltd also signed an MoU for a wind farm electricity project of 250 MW worth Rs 1,000 crore. The proposed project will be set up at Mandvi.

Apollo Tyres Ltd signed an MoU to set up a tyre manufacturing plant at Vadodara with an investment of Rs 600 crore (Rs 6 billion).

In addition, Indigold Refineries Ltd intends to set up a gold, silver and precious metal refinery at Bhuj and will invest Rs 735 crore (Rs 735 billion).

On the third day of the summit, the emphasis was on giving education a corporate look.

In the education sector, Adani group signed an MoU for setting up a port management institute at a cost of Rs 200 crore (Rs 2 billion).

Nirma group signed an MoU for setting up a marine engineering institute worth Rs 30 crore (Rs 300 million). Sandev International will set up an institute of management studies with an investment of Rs 135 crore (Rs 1.35 billion), while a Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) MoU has been signed between Mosaliya Mir Institute and the NID for science and technology.

The state government's science and technology department signed MoUs with the National Institute of Design and ORG, an IT company set up by Vikram Sarabhai, on Tuesday at Ahmedabad.

The Mou signed with NID is for developing a new campus for IT design at a cost of Rs 15 crore, while that with ORG is for a technology park focusing on bio-technology.

State education minister Anandiben Patel said with a World Bank assistance of Rs 200 crore (Rs 2 billion), the government will embark on a technical education improvement programme.

Rajiv Gupta, director of higher and technical education, said the government has identified chemicals, pharmacy, safety management, water management and hotel management courses to promote these industries in Gujarat.
