Basic operators welcome review of IUC
May 10, 2003 20:59 IST
Basic telecom operators on Saturday welcomed Trai's decision to review Inter-connect Usage Charge regime announced in January this year and hoped that calling-party-pays regime would be reversed.
"This is a welcome move. We will get three months time to discuss the crucial issue relating to the IUC. Trai now must ensure that CPP regime, under which incoming calls on mobile phones were made free, is reversed," S C Khanna, secretary general of Association of Basic Telecom Operators, told PTI.
According to ABTO, CPP regime had made calls from landline to cellular phone more expensive and ABTO had approached Trai to withdraw the contentious regime with immediate effect.
The Cellular Operators Association of India, however, declined to comment on the development, saying they would like to see the implications of such a decision.
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd said it would soon announce post-IUC cellular and WLL tariffs.
"We will have to see the details of the review announcement of Trai. We will ensure that the new cellular and WLL tariffs are compliant with existing IUC regime," BSNL chief Prithipal Singh said.
Most of the operators including Bharti and Reliance were not available for comments.
