Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Tuesday directed the cellular and basic telecom operators to provide accessibility to Internet services for cellular subscribers.

Trai's move would enable cellular subscribers to enjoy Internet services on their personal computers and laptops just like their landline counterparts.

"Trai today directed access providers (cellular/basic service operators) to make Internet access available to subscribers as per the National Numbering Plan 2003," a Trai statement said in New Delhi.

The directive is part of Trai's efforts to increase Internet subscriber base in the country.

The issue arose when Trai was informed that Internet access code, 172XXX, is not currently accessible from some cellular operators network, the statement said.

"In order to ensure compliance to terms and conditions of ISP licence and to protect the interest of consumers, Trai today directed both basic service operators and cellular mobile service providers that Internet services should be made accessible as per the National Numbering Plan 2003, in 45 days time."

Trai officials said the move would enable cellphone users with PCs or laptops to access Internet through cellular phones, but clarified that it would not enable access to Internet through mobile phones.
