Sensex spurts 86 points at close

Overnight gains on the US markets saw the Sensex open with a solid gain of 32 points at 5,487. Broad-based buying across the sector pushed the index above the 5,500 levels in early deals as tech, cement and auto sectors attracted considerable buying support ahead of other stocks.
However, buying slowed down in early noon deals, but picked up thereafter as sharp rally in cement, select heavyweight, pharma, tech and other old economy stocks propelled the gains of of the index to a high of 5,556.
The Sensex, though shed some gains towards the closing hours, still ended the last day of the trading week with a gain of 86 points at 5,541.
Reliance firmed up in late noon deals on fresh buying support, and surged 3% (Rs 14) to Rs 520. HLL closed up a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 201. ITC, however, slipped from higher levels and ended off-gains with a rupee loss at Rs 986.
Infosys attracted considerable buying support, and advanced nearly 3% (Rs 135) to Rs 5,256. While Wipro gained a per cent (Rs 21) to Rs 1,700, Satyam closed up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 355.
L&T continuing with its upward trend from yesterday's close, vaulted 8% (Rs 38) to Rs 498 on relentless buying support. Grasim gained around 3% (Rs 26) to Rs 978. While ACC added a per cent (Rs 3) to close at Rs 231, Gujarat Ambuja was up Rs 2 at Rs 302.
Hero Honda held gains on sustained buying support to finish nearly 4% higher (Rs 14) at Rs 412. Bajaj moved into positive zone in afternoon deals, and gained around 2% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,100. Tata Motors ended with a modest gain of Rs 2 at Rs 435.
Cipla witnessed a sharp turnaround towards the fag-end on hectic buying support, and the counter logged 5% gains (Rs 66) to Rs 1,279. Ranbaxy clocked 2% gains (Rs 18) to Rs 1,124. Dr. Reddy's, however, closed down a rupee at Rs 1,360.
SBI added 2% (Rs 10) to Rs 489. MTNL, too, moved up 2% to Rs 125. HPCL, however, which rose around 5% yesterday, remained weak through the session, and dropped 3% (Rs 15) to Rs 418. BHEL slipped from higher levels, and ended down a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 463.
Zee soared 5% (Rs 7) to Rs 155.
