Sensex ends flat at 5132

The Sensex, after Friday's drubbing, opened 13 points higher at 5,145. Selective buying across the board lifted the index to an intra-day high of 5,163 in early deals.

Selling soon commenced in mid-morning deals as weakness in most of the sectors kept the index at subdued levels for better part of the trading session. Though the markets gained in patches, the index slipped sharply below the 5,100 levels to touch a low of 5,090 towards the closing hours.

The Sensex finally ended flat at 5,132 following recovery in select old and new economy stocks. The Nifty, too, ended unchanged from Friday's close at 1,646.

Reliance, which exhibited losses through the session, ended 3% lower (Rs 13) at Rs 480. The diversified major registered a volume of over 40.60 lakh (4.06 million) on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 196 crore (Rs 1.96 billion). ITC at Rs 913 (up Rs 5) and HLL at Rs 188 (up a rupee) held gains on buying support.

HPCL added Rs 4 to Rs 393. MTNL closed up a tad at Rs 119. SBI and BHEL, however, were down a per cent each at Rs 456 (down Rs 4) and Rs 444 (down Rs 5), respectively.

Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 5 or 2% to Rs 277) and ACC (down Rs 7 or 3% to Rs 219) proved weak on selling pressure. L&T, which traded at mixed levels, gained 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 418. Grasim ended up a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 871.

Infosys closed with a marginal loss of Rs 3 at Rs 4,809. Satyam was down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 327, with volumes suring over 84.64 lakh (8.46 million) on the BSE with a value of Rs 277 crore (Rs 2.77 billion). Wipro, however, ended at higher levels with a gain of Rs 22 at Rs 1,529.

Hero Honda bounced from its lows to finish up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 384. Tata Motors, too, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 3) at Rs 417. The auto major recorded a volume of over 17.96 lakh (1.80 million) on the BSE. Bajaj, however, ended on a lacklustre note with a loss of 2% (Rs 25) at Rs 975.

Dr. Reddy's moved up nearly 2% (Rs 22) to Rs 1,327, while Ranbaxy notched up 2% gains (Rs 18) to Rs 1,082. Cipla closed up a per cent (Rs 17) at Rs 1,219.

Other pharma scrips, too, ended on a firm note. While Glaxo surged 5% (Rs 26) to Rs 564, Novartis moved up 6% (Rs 20) to Rs 380. Pfizer advanced 7% (Rs 32) to Rs 521.

Bharti Tele displayed firm buying support, and raked in 8% gains (Rs 7) to close at Rs 91. The counter clocked a volume of over 23.34 lakh (2.33 million) on the BSE with a value of Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million).

While Tisco advanced 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 362, ONGC was up Rs 2 at Rs 618. More than 27 lakh (2.7 million) Tisco shares changed hands on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 97 crore (Rs 970 million).

ICICI Bank closed up a rupee at Rs 261. Hindalco, however, lost a per cent (Rs 8) to Rs 1,245.

Zee closed up a rupee at Rs 131. Adlabs vaulted 7% (Rs 7) to Rs 101. Balaji Tele advanced 6% (Rs 5) to Rs 86. While Padmalaya Telefilms and Mukta Arts notched up 5% gain each to Rs 93 (up Rs 5) and Rs 77 (up Rs 4) respectively, Saregama moved up 3% (Rs 2) to Rs 70.

Mastek moved up nearly 6% (Rs 15) to Rs 284, on the back of a volume surging over 11.68 lakh (1.17 million) on the BSE. While Mphasis Digital added 2% each to Rs 630 (down Rs 13) and Rs 527 (down Rs 13) respectively, NIIT closed up a per cent at Rs 235. i-flex, however, ended down a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 799.

Kotak Bank slipped nearly 3% (Rs 9) to Rs 337. Oriental Bank, Corportion Bank, PNB and BOI ended 2% lower at Rs 219 (down Rs 5), Rs 208 (down Rs 4), Rs 177 (down Rs 3) and Rs 57 (down a rupee), respectively. UTI Bank, however, soared nearly 9% (Rs 9) to Rs 118.
