Telecom sector should come out of litigations: Trai

August 11, 2003 15:04 IST

Concerned over the ongoing clash between cellular and basic operators, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Monday said it was high time that the fast growing telecom sector came out of litigations.

"The sector should come out of litigations...as a regulator, my aim is that consumers should get the lowest tariffs, quality of services and maximum growth in the industry...litigation is not something I enjoy," Trai chairman Pradip Baijal said in New Delhi.

On the recent Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal judgement on wireless in local loop services, Baijal said, "The judgement will be implemented in letter and spirit in the shortest time."

He claimed that the policy followed by Trai brought tariffs to a significantly lower level and had led to accelerated growth.

"The policy should lead to lowest tariff and maximum growth. This combination will allow operators to make profits," Baijal said.
