Hero Honda may slash production
April 22, 2003 21:01 IST
After Maruti, Kinetic Engineering and Hyundai, Hero Honda Motors, India's largest motorcycle maker, on Tuesday said it might cut production if the ongoing nationwide truckers' strike is prolonged by 3-4 days.
"If the strike goes on for another 3-4 days, we may have to cut production," Hero Honda Motors chairman Brijmohan Lall Munjal said. He declined to give details.
Munjal said Hero Honda 'fortunately' had stocks with dealers to sell to customers as well as materials with vendors, which enabled it to continue production till now.
Hero Honda has two manufacturing plants at Dharuhera and Ballabhgarh in Gurgaon (Haryana) whose production capacity has been increased to 2.2 million units for this fiscal.
Hyundai Motor India President B V R Subbu had also stated that its Chennai plant would be closed down if the strike continued for few more days due to lack of material supplies.
Over two million truckers have gone on strike since April 14 to protest fluctuation in diesel prices, value-added tax and repeal of the order to junk 15-year-old trucks.
