Sebi to seek market data regularly

April 15, 2003 21:00 IST

The Securities and Exchange Board of India will seek data on battering of stocks, including infotech scrips, last week as part of its regular monitoring work.

The regulator seeks information from exchanges on regular basis and decides to probe further only if 'it suspects foul play or violation of norms,' a Sebi spokesperson said on Tuesday night.

Asked on the volatility witnessed on exchanges led by steep fall in Infosys prices, the Sebi spokesperson said that the fluctuations in the market are an outcome of various factors, including news on company performance.

Whenever substantial ups and down happen the surveillance mechanism at stock exchanges comes into action to monitor the development closely, he added.
