Politicians, celebrities pay homage to Ambani

A large number of politicians, industrialists and friends rushed to Ambani's residence to pay their last respects after the flower-decked body was brought down for 'darshan and homage' shortly after 10 a.m.

Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander, in his message, said the nation had lost one of the doyens of the modern Indian corporate community, a philanthropist and above all a great human being endowed with great compassion and concern for the underprivileged sections of the society.

This new star, which rose on the horizon of the Indian industry three decades ago, remained on the top till the end by virtue of his ability to dream big and translate it into reality through the strength of his tenacity and perseverance, Alexander said in his condolence message.

"I join the people of Maharashtra in paying my tribute to the memory of Ambani and convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family," he added.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Minister of State for Home Kripa Shankar, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, industrialists Ratan Tata and Adi Godrej were those who came in early to pay their respects.

Both his sons, Mukesh and Anil, were present beside the body and were receiving the mourners.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Textile Merchants' Mahajan in a statement said the Mulji Jetha market, city's largest textile market, would remain closed tomorrow as a mark of respect for Ambani.

Bharatiya Janata Party President M Venkaiah Naidu, condoling the death of Ambani, described it as a great loss to the nation.

In a message to the members of the bereaved family, he described the Reliance Industry's chairman as the doyen of Indian industry who created an industrial empire which immensely added to the economic growth of the country.

Ambani took the quality of Indian entrepreneurship to new heights, Naidu added.
