Advani, Modi visit Ambanis, pay homage to Dhirubhai

Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani cut short his visit to Gujarat to fly to Mumbai to pay homage to Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman of the Rs 600-billion Reliance group, who passed away on Saturday night at the Breach Candy Hospital.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and former Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel too accompanied Advani.

Advani paid rich tributes to Ambani, who, like him, traced his ethnic roots to Sindh province, now in Pakistan.

"Dhirubhai's achievements helped the country present itself as a good industrial nation. He brought laurels to Gujarat and India," Advani told reporters. "His death has saddened me."

Ambani had been admitted to the hospital on June 24 after suffering a brain stroke. Ambani, who lived in Mumbai for decades, hailed from Chorwad village in the Junagarh district of Gujarat. Many of his industrial units are in Gujarat.

Advani represents Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Minister of State in the PMO, Vijay Goel, has arrived in Mumbai to represent Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Ambani funeral which will take place at 4.30 at the Chandanwadi crematorium on Sunday.

Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray, Congress leader R K Dhawan, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and a host of celebrities, politicians, businessmen, bureaucrats, and common men thronged the Ambani residence to pay homage to the departed soul.
