India announces $10 mn assistance to AfghanistanThe government on Wednesday announced $10 million in assistance to Afghanistan for immediate purchase requirements of the war-ravaged country even as the two sides declared their resolve to eliminate terrorism and religious extremism in all its forms. After a wide-ranging talks with visiting Head of the Afghan interim government Hamid Karzai, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also announced New Delhi's decision to contribute to the World Bank-managed Afghan Reconstruction Trust Fund. Declaring India would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Afghanistan in the reconstruction of that country, Vajpayee said, ''We have offered $10 million to meet immediate purchase requirements of Afghanistan''. The prime minister said New Delhi would assist Kabul in the fields of education, health, agriculture and information technology.
