India has a number of institutes maintained by the Navy to train and educate its sailors and officers. While a few of them are for general education, most of them specialise in a particular field of study and prepare their students for a career in that field.

National Defence Academy
It imparts basic military training to students who have completed Class 10+2 of their education. (See article on Army Institutes for more details)

Naval Academy
Similar to the NDA, the Naval Academy imparts basic graduate training to 10+2 candidates who specifically opt for a career in the Navy. It is known as the INS Mandovi, after the river it is located near.

National Defence College
The National Defence College aims to impart training in national and international security to select senior Civil and Defence Officers. It conducts a 47-week National Security and Strategic Studies Course every year between the months of January and December.

It is formally affiliated with Madras University and awards an MPhil in 'Defence and Strategic Studies'. Its course covers a wide variety of subjects ranging from India's Cultural Heritage to Urbanisation to Sustainable Development.

(d) Study on global issues
(e) India's strategic neighborhood
(f) India's immediate neighborhood
