Are coaching classes necessary to do well in competitive exams?

Parents today are spending thousands of rupees on their children's additional tuition fees, only to ensure that the latter are able to do well in their exams. Good grades in school ensure admission to a reputed college, and good grades in college mean that the candidate can secure a coveted seat in an institution of higher learning.

We're asking you -- are all those extra classes really necessary? Do you think that they are a waste of money? Or in today's competitive academic environment, are they required by candidates looking to excel?

Is it possible for a student to secure the desired grades in a competitive exam without any additional coaching?
