JD-U leader quits over pact with BJP
January 11, 2005 14:41 IST
Janata Dal-United national general secretary Tanvir Hassan on Tuesday resigned to protest against the party's alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party for the Bihar assembly election.
"I have faxed my resignation to the JD-U president and NDA convenor George Fernandes expressing my displeasure over the pact with BJP, which was done against the wishes of a majority of party workers," he said.
Hassan, also a member of the legislative council, charged Fernandes with compromising the "interests of JD-U due to his soft attitude towards BJP, which has a communal image among the people".
"Fernandes and other senior leaders, instead of strengthening the party by generating confidence among secular voters, have compromised JD-U's interests due to their friendship with the BJP," he said.
There was no proper coordination between the party leadership and the workers, he said. "In this condition, I feel suffocated as there is no point continuing in the post of the JD-U national general secretary," he said.
