Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies of creating a 'social divide' and 'destroying' the culture and social values of the country.

Addressing an election rally at the historic Ridge Maidan in Shimla, she said the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre has shattered the dreams of freedom fighters.

"The BJP-led government has broken all records of corruption and it has become difficult to count the scams and scandals under them," she said.

As a responsible opposition party, Congress is discharging its duty by pointing out the shortcomings of the government, but instead of taking corrective steps, the BJP is levelling baseless allegations, Gandhi said.

She accused the BJP of violating all norms and traditions 'while leaving no stone unturned to malign and denigrate former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, but the country continues to love and respect them because of their works and affection for the people'.

Expressing concern over growing unemployment in Himachal Pradesh, Gandhi said job avenues would be squeezed further if profit-making public undertakings were sold to the private sector.

"Injustice and corruption in recruitment in the state is a serious matter," she said adding that the BJP has made to sincere efforts to create employment opportunities.

"People elect governments for welfare and prosperity, but the BJP leaders only fulfilled their selfish ends," she said.

Earlier, addressing public meetings at Hamirpur and Palampur, Gandhi said she would monitor the performance of the state government if Congress were voted to power.

She also addressed a massive rally at Nalagarh.
