Naxals in Bastar take poll staff hostage

Naxalites on Monday took hostage election staff at two places disrupting voting in the Bijapur assembly constituency of Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh.

Official sources told PTI from Bijapur that People's War cadres have taken hostage the polling staff of Cherkanthi and Reddy booths.

One person was injured when suspected Naxalites opened fire at voters in Sarguja district.   

In another incident, Naxals set afire the vehicle of Mirtu magistrate when he was touring the area in Bijapur constituency. But no one was injured in the incident.

The state election office sources said they were yet to receive a formal report of the incidents from the district returning officer at Dantewada.

Bastar Inspector General of Police Sant Kumar Paswan told PTI the Naxalites attacked police parties in three different places in the region and in one place triggered two landmines, but no security personnel were injured.

The police also recovered a live landmine from Silger booth of Konta segment of Dantewada district, the IGP said.
