At least nine Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants were killed on Sunday when the army foiled an infiltration bid on the eve of the first phase of assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in Kupwara sector, a defence spokesman said.
The infiltrators were killed when the troops took them on at Tangdar sector near the Line of Control on Sunday afternoon, he said, adding the action set off an encounter between the security forces and the militants, which was on till late on Sunday night.
Troops noticed the militants trying to sneak into the valley and challenged them. However, they opened fire and tried to slip away but were killed in the retaliatory action, the spokesman said.
