840 killed since poll announcement in J&K

Election 2002 Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Although the fourth and final phase of the assembly election concluded without much violence on Tuesday, figures released by the Jammu and Kashmir government suggest as many as 840 people have died ever since the announcement of polls two months ago.

During the two-month period the "level of violence has been fairly high", state Director General of Police Ashok Suri said in Srinagar.

Fifty political activists and 260 innocent people were killed. Security forces lost 160 officers and jawans, he said.

"But we neutralised 370 militants in the state in the past two months," he said.

Suri said as many as 768 people, including 500 civilians, were injured.

"These polls in the state were a great challenge to all of us -- the nation, people of Jammu and Kashmir, the state government, the security forces and the poll officials," state Chief Secretary I S Malhi said.

"The forces that tried to create an element of fear and increase the level of violence in the state have been given a befitting reply," he said.
