Nationalist Congress Party general secretary Tariq Anwar has demanded the arrest of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi under the Prevention of Terrorism Act after the Concerned Citizens' Tribunal held him responsible for the riots following the Godhra incident.
Retired Supreme Court judge Krishna Iyer headed the tribunal.
"There is no reason why the Modi government should not be sacked," he said.
He said the report clearly mentioned that the post-Godhra carnage was an organised crime perpetrated by the chief minister and his government.
The tribunal also accused the state police of "not fulfilling its constitutional duty and preventing mass massacre, rape and arson".
Anwar claimed the riots were a planned conspiracy of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. "We urge the international community to declare them terrorist organisations and put pressure on the [Indian] government to ban them."
He also said that it was shameful that Modi was using the Gujarat Gaurav Yatra to spread the poison of fascism. He also accused Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of not taking any action against Modi.
The NCP has decided to contest 125 seats in the state assembly election in alliance with Janata Dal - Secular led by former prime minister Deve Gowda and Samajwadi Janata Party led by former prime minister Chandrashekhar.
