Flooding may hit polling in Bihar

The flood situation in Bihar, which remains grim, is likely to affect the electoral process in parts of the 16 Lok Sabha constituencies going to the polls on October 3.

Official sources in Patna said it was difficult to predict at this stage how many polling booths would be affected as most of the areas were submerged.

Sources said campaigning in the flood affected areas has been disrupted as large areas are still inundated. They said the administration had chalked out a contingency plan to deal with the situation and deploy a large number of boats to ferry polling personnel and material to the booths.

Central Water Commission sources said the Ganga was flowing above the danger mark at Hathidah and Kahalgao by 24 cm and 131 cm respectively.

The Burhi Gandak river crossed the danger mark at Khagaria by 86 cm, while Baltara was overflowing the danger mark at Baltara and Kursaila by 64 cm and 150 cm respectively. The Mahananda overtopped the danger mark at Dhengraghat and Jhaba by 90 cm and 62 cm respectively.

Local weather office sources said light to heavy rains were expected in the catchment areas of all major rivers during the next 24 hours.
