11 per cent turnout in UP

An estimated 11 per cent voters cast their votes in the first two hours of polling for 24 of the 85 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The polling started at 0700 hours today amidst elaborate security arrangements. No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere so far.

The highest - 17 per cent in the first two hours - has been recorded at Badaun, where former Union minister Salim Sherwani is in the fray as a Samajwadi Party candidate.

Kheri reported the lowest voter turnout of three per cent during this period.

In Pilibhit, where Union minister Maneka Gandhi is contesting, 11 per cent voters had cast their votes. She is an independent candidate supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Fourteen per cent polling was reported from Baghpat, 15 per cent from Kairana, 14 per cent from Muzaffarnagar and 10 per cent each from Sambhal, Nainital and Bareilly.

Polling for 30 Lok Sabha seats in the state was completed in the first phase on September 18 with a voter turnout of about 50 per cent. The remaining 31 constituencies will go to the polls on October 3.
