BJP, JD-U deny split in Karnataka

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United) tonight denied reports that their alliance is breaking up and asserted that they would form the next government in Karnataka.

While JD-U president C Byre Gowda denied the reports at a press conference in Bangalore, BJP general secretary Ramachandre Gowda issued a statement that they were far from truth.

Byre Gowda skirted the issue of chief ministership, while the BJP said the new legislators of the alliance would elect the leader.

Ramachandre Gowda said the alliance was formed to prevent the Congress from coming to power.

Admitting that there was some confusion in seat-sharing as the tie-up was finalised at the eleventh hour, Ramachandre Gowda said that by remaining in the fray in the Basavanagudi assembly constituency, state Information Minister Anant Nag was showing disrespect to senior JD-U politicians like Chief Minister J H Patel and Union Commerce Minister Ramakrishna Hegde.

R V Harish of the JD-U had withdrawn from the contest in Rajajinagar in favour of BJP spokesman Suresh Kumar. Anant Nag should also retire in favour of BJP nominee K N Subba Reddy, he said.
