BJP worker killed in Mandvi

Lalbhai Kasta, a Bharatiya Janata Party worker and a close associate of Gujarat Industry Minister Suresh Mehta, was murdered in the port town of Mandvi in Kutch district late last night.

Last year too, one of Mehta's supporters, Bauji Jadeja, had been murdered in Kutch district.

The police said one person had been detained in this connection.

The assault, which apparently has no connection with the Lok Sabha polls, was said to be the result of a dispute over hiring of an auto-rickshaw by a Khawda community youth, leading to heated exchanges between the two groups. Kasta, a former president of the Mandvi municipality, had intervened in this scuffle and dispersed the two groups. Later, his body was found with deep wounds on his back. He was apparently attacked when he was returning home late last night.

Despite this incident, police said, polling was progressing peacefully in Mandvi when reports came in.
