SDF heading for absolute majority in SikkimThe ruling Sikkim Democratic Front tonight gained an absolute majority, winning 17 seats in the 32-member assembly to form a new government in this Himalayan state. The party was also inching ahead to secure a two-third majority as electoral trends indicated. Of the 21 seats, the results of which were declared so far, the SDF won 17 seats. The main Opposition Sikkim Sangram Parishad led by former chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari has won only five seats so far. The SDF won 19 seats in the 1994 assembly election. Most of its prominent leaders and ministers returned to the assembly this time barring Finance Minister Ram Lepcha and Health Minister Dr Dilli Prasad Kharel. Chief Minister Chamling is expected to meet the governor on Thursday and stake his claim to form the next government. UNI
