BJP wins 29 seats in MP

In a virtual encore of last year's performance, the Bharatiya Janata Party in Madhya Pradesh has won 29 seats, restricting the Congress to 11 constituencies.

In the process, the Congress suffered serious reverses in the defeat of former Uttar Pradesh governor Motilal Vora (Rajnandgaon), party spokesman Ajit Jogi (Shahdol), Congress Sewa Dal president Suresh Pachouri (Bhopal), state Congress president Radha Kishan Malaviya (Shajapur), former Union minister Vimla Verma (Seoni) and former state Congress president Parasram Bharadwaj (Sarangarh).

Prominent BJP losers were television actor Nitish Bharadwaj (Rajgarh), National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission chairman Dalip Singh Bhuria (Jhabua) and former Union minister Larang Sai (Sarguja).

Besides retaining 20 of the 30 seats it won in 1998, the BJP wrested five seats from the Congress. Similarly, the Congress has already retained its five previous seats and captured an equal number of seats from the BJP. It is all set to wrest the Rewa seat held by the BJP.

Notable Congress winners include party general secretary Madhavrao Scindia (Guna), former Union minister Kamal Nath (Chhindwara), former chief minister Shyama Charan Shukla (Mahasamund), Chief Minister Digvijay Singh's younger brother Laxman Singh (Rajgarh) and former state home minister Charan Das Mahant (Janjgir).
