Sharad Yadav begins indefinite dharna

Sharad Yadav, Janata Dal (United) leader and party candidate from the Madhepura parliamentary constituency began his indefinite dharna at the local Jhanda maidan today, demanding countermanding of the October 3 polling in his constituency.

Yadav, who started his dharna at 11 am, claimed the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal had violated all electoral norms during the voting.

"High-handedness by the RJD was a matter of concern for those who believed in the long tradition of our democracy," he said.

He said he would continue his agitation until the Election Commission took a clear-cut decision on the issue. He said the media was also aware of the facts that influenced polling in favour of RJD President Laloo Prasad Yadav.

The Bharatiya Janata Party too joined the JD (U) to press for the countermanding of the Madhepura Lok Sabha election.

Opposition leader Sushil Kumar Modi alleged that the RJD had "misused" the Madhepura district administration on the day of polling and acted "undemocratically" in connivance with the local administration.

He said the election commission should seek a detailed report from the chief of the Central Security Force regarding force deployment at each and every booth in the constituency.

Prominent among those who joined the dharna were BJP Vice-President Kailashpati Mishra, BJP legislator Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha and senior JD (U) leaders Mangnilal Mandal, Deonath Prasad and Akhlak Ahmad.
