5 policemen killed in Assam, 7 in Tripura

At least seven people, including four CRPF jawans, were gunned down by outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force terrorists in Tripura's Dhalai district today.

Inspector General of Police (law end order) K Salim Ali told UNI that the killers also took away two self-loading rifles from the slain jawans. He said heavily-armed ATTF terrorists ambushed a CRPF patrol party at Girish Karbari Para under the Gandachara police station in Dhalai district at about 0715 hour, killing the jawans, the civilian driver and his helper on the spot.

The security personnel retaliated killing a militant in an hour-long exchange of fire.

In Assam, at least five police personnel were shot dead by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom terrorists at the Hahsora polling booth under Bhabanipur police station in the Barpeta parliamentary constituency just before polling was to begin today.

In another incident a crude bomb went off damaging the polling station at Gobinda Para under the Santir Bazar police station in south Tripura at about 0430 hours. No one was hurt. Polling material was not damaged in the incident. Polling personnel were sleeping nearby when the incident occurred. However, polling started at about 0900 hours.

On Saturday, five people, including four CRPF jawans, were killed and three injured when ULFA terrorists ambushed a CRPF patrol party by exploding a powerful bomb in Assam's Tinsukia district.

The police suspect the bomb, planted on the road, was exploded with the help of a remote controlled device. Thereafter, the ULFA terrorists reportedly fired at the patrol party. The injured were rushed to the Tinsukia civil hospital.

Last month, ULFA terrorists killed Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Pannanal Oswal and attempted to kill state Revenue Minister Zoinath Sharma on Thursday evening. Dr Sharma survived, but four others died.

In Tripura, during the past 28 days terrorists have gunned down at least 19 people, mostly para-military personnel, and kidnapped 17 government officials in separate incidents. On September 6, armed militants abducted the government officials, mostly panchayat secretaries, from the Manu block office in Dhalai district. The rebels later released one of the 17 hostages, demanding Rs 10 million as ransom for release of the rest.

On September 22, four Assam Rifles jawans and their civilian driver were shot dead by the militants at Kupilong village under R K Pur police station in south Tripura. Four days later, banned National Liberation Front of Tripura militants shot dead eight BSF jawans and looted 10 sophisticated arms, including nine SLRs from the slain jawans at the Chawmanu-Thalchara border road in Dhalai district.
