60 per cent voting in Narasaraopet

Polling in the Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency and its seven assembly segments in Andhra Pradesh passed off peacefully today barring stray incidents, leading to police firing in the air at two places.

Over 60 per cent of the 12.62 lakh voters exercised their franchise, official sources said.

Police fired in the air at Daugi village, when an independent legislator, along with his supporters, tried to storm a polling station and at Goggulapadu village when ruling TDP agents tried to drive away Congress agents from two polling booths.

People abstained from voting in two booths at Sarangapalli village in response to a poll boycott given by the Naxalites of the banned People's War Group.

The polling in the constituency, which was scheduled for the first phase on September 5, was postponed after a bomb blast at the residence-cum-nursing home of Panchayat Raj Minister Kodela Siva Prasad Rao, in which four people including an independent candidate, were killed.
