EVMs to be made universal in next general election: Gill

Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill today expressed confidence that the Electronic Voting Machine would be used in all the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies in the country during the next elections, provided that they were not held within two years.

Addressing a press conference after reviewing the poll arrangements in Tamil Nadu with senior officials in Madras, he said the use of EVMs was welcomed by voters and political parties alike.

Bought ten years ago at a cost of Rs 750 million, they remained unused all these years. The machines were utilised in the assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Goa.

Stating that the EVMs received wide appreciation in the rural areas also, Dr Gill said he was happy to note that all the parties in Andhra Pradesh had demanded that the EVMs be utilised throughout the state during this election.

He said the EVMs could be used in all the 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu during the next assembly elections, due in the year 2001.
