Centre fears increased ISI activity to disrupt polls

Apprehending trouble by ISI-sponsored activists in various parts of the country, the Centre today directed the state governments to beef up security so as to foil the sinister designs of such forces to disrupt the impending Lok Sabha elections.

Home Secretary Kamal Pande, who held a meeting of home secretaries and director generals of police of the state governments in New Delhi, asked them to be vigilant in the coming weeks to ensure that peace and harmony was maintained in their states.

During the marathon meeting, Pande, along with senior officials of the home ministry and paramilitary forces, discussed the law and order situation in the country and approved measures that are required to firmly put down violence by various militant outfits.

It is reported that several secessionist and militant groups of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the North-East are planning to step up subversive activities during the polls. The ministry for home affairs has put on maximum alert the vulnerable states like Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa where extremist organisations have already given a call for poll boycott.
