Australia [Images] retained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy after the crucial fifth and final One-Day International was called off because of heavy rain during New Zealand's [Images] gutsy chase. It left the series tied 2-2.

The series-deciding match, which commenced five hours behind schedule due to rain, was reduced to a 22-over affair.

Put in to bat, Australia scored 168 for 4, thanks mainly to unbeaten half centuries from wicketkeeper Brad Haddin (88) and Callum Ferguson (55).

Rain then intervened again during New Zealand's run-chase and their target was revised to 156 from 20 overs. But, with no let up, the match was eventually called off after the 14th over with the visitors 123 for 6, needing 33 off six overs.

Opener Martin Guptill was unbeaten on 64 with debutant Brendon Diamanti on 26.

New Zealand won the first two matches in Perth and Melbourne.

Australia, who retained the trophy by virtue of winning the last series between the two countries, cameback strongly, winning in Sydney and Adelaide.
